We’re embracing nostalgia by highlighting some of our favorite shows with powerful lead women. Below are a few recommended titles from the 1980s, 1990s, and early 00s featuring strong and iconic female characters and celebrities we’ve always loved watching that you can find on Philo this month.

Set in New York City in 1988, Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver star as clever, and eager young professionals that devise a cunning plan to get the credit they deserve. Follow Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) and Katharine Parker (Sigourney Weaver) as they seek revenge on their manager and slip into various scenarios.

This comedy series examines the duo’s friendship as they face their own troubles and cope with a never ending road of uncomfortable daily experiences in a funny, authentic way. 

[The Devil Wears Prada](https://www.philo.com/player/show/U2hvdzo2MDg1NDg4OTk2NDg0Mzg2OTA) (2006): Another Big Apple classic, this Manhattan Dramedy stars young journalist Andy (Anne Hathaway) and Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) in an unforgiving and fast-paced prestigious fashion-world scene. Watch Andy as she goes from frump to fabulous, pragmatic to daring, during a transition she thought was impossible. Follow Andy’s journey as she takes on a career path catering to Miranda, a demanding, diva, editor-in-chief, and balances life in the fast-paced world of New York City.

Set in the Upper East Side, Fran Fine finds herself freshly dumped, jobless, and at her own rock bottom contemplating what’s next. Enter Mr. Sheffield, Manhattan’s svelte and stylish bachelor in need of hiring a nanny for his two elementary school-aged children. Watch Fran Fine navigate her new role as a nanny, life in NY, and a blooming romance. 

[Lucille Ball: Life, Death & Money](https://www.philo.com/player/show/U2hvdzo2MDg1NDg4OTk2NDg1MDA2NDQ) (2021): A story about one of the most legendary female comedians on television, Lucille Ball. When Ball died in 1989 at the age of 77, she had an estimated net worth of $40 million, [which is equal to about $80 million today](https://stylecaster.com/lucille-ball-net-worth/). The legacy estate was divided between her second husband and children. The series, Life, Death and Money dives into the personal lives, highlights, and scandals of celebrities and the monetary trails they earned and left behind. 

[CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story](https://www.philo.com/player/show/U2hvdzo2MDg1NDg4OTk2NDg0NzE3NzM) (2013): Originally released by VH1, this documentary narrated by Keke Palmer and Drew Sidora follows the full storyline of the legendary music group TLC. Nominated for seven awards, the film begins by showcasing the girls’ lives as children and then fast-forwards to the year 1990 in Atlanta when the group initially forms. The film debuted with 4.5 million viewers when it first aired on television. As a result of the high viewership it then became the highest-rated television film premiere of 2013, [as well as the highest-rated original film premiere in VH1’s history](https://web.archive.org/web/20131023164910/http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/10/22/crazysexycool-the-tlc-story-draws-4-5-million-total-viewers/210833/).

The movie follows the story of Rick Dalton, a fading TV actor, and his stunt double, Cliff Booth, as they navigate a changing film industry and the events surrounding the infamous Manson Family murders. In the movie, Butler plays fictional Manson family member Tex Watson.

That film follows two hitmen, Ray and Ken, who are sent to Bruges, Belgium, to lay low after a job goes wrong. In the original, he and a librarian love interest discover the remains of an Egyptian priest and unleash the 10 plagues of Egypt.

Mescal is nominated for his role in Aftersun where he plays Calum. In the movie, he and his young daughter Sophie and her father Calum, go on a holiday to Turkey where Calum's struggles with depression and detachment become more apparent. In the movie, he explains to his son when he turns 21 that the men in his family can travel back in time to moments they have lived before. He advises him to use the power wisely, but his son takes his own path to discover what’s right for him.

Blanchett has previously won two Academy Awards, including for best supporting actress for her work in [The Aviator](https://www.philo.com/player/show/U2hvdzo2MDg1NDg4OTk2NDg0Mzk0MzI), which is available to watch on Philo! Blanchett plays Katherine Hepburn in the biographical film about Howard Hughes, who became an aviation pioneer and Hollywood director.

The film focuses on a happy-go-lucky teacher that is learning how to drive, but has her outlook on life challenged by a cynical driving instructor.

Starring comedian Martin Lawrence in the lead role, the series was based in the city of Detroit and followed the misadventures of a disc jockey, Martin’s girlfriend, Gina Waters (Tisha Campbell), and Martin’s best friends. The show often featured slapstick humor and featured many celebrity guest stars. Martin was the highest-rated program during its run and was nominated for several awards, including NAACP Image Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Emmy Awards.

[Queen Sugar](https://www.philo.com/player/show/U2hvdzo2MDg1NDg4OTk2NDg0NjE2Mzk): This American drama television series is created and executive produced by Ava DuVernay, based on the novel of the same name by Natalie Baszile. The series follows the life of three siblings – Nova Bordelon (Rutina Wesley), Charley Bordelon (Dawn-Lyen Garner), and Ralph Angel Bordelon (Kofi Scribe) – who, after the death of their father, must learn to navigate their lives and the dynamics of their newly formed family. Groundhog Day is here! 

Apologies if you’re just hearing this now, but Punxsutawney Phil unfortunately saw his shadow, [forecasting six more weeks of winter](https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/02/us/groundhog-day-punxsutawney-phil-2023-trnd/index.html)!

Emerging from our own post-holiday, wintry hibernation, we felt it appropriate to remind you that [Groundhog Day](https://www.philo.com/player/show/U2hvdzo2MDg1NDg4OTk2NDg0NDgwMTk), the 1993 comedy starring Bill Murray and Andie Macdowell, is available to watch right here on Philo. You can even experience your own déjà vu and watch Groundhog Day all day! Watch it live on AMC with the final airing beginning at 8:30 p.m. PT or save it to your DVR and watch at your convenience. 

First, a quick reminder: Groundhog Day is a unique American tradition that is celebrated every year on February 2. The "holiday" originated in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where it has been a tradition for over 130 years. On this day, people gather to watch a groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, emerge from its burrow to see if it will predict the end of winter by either seeing its shadow or not. In short: Shadow, six more weeks of winter; no shadow, spring is coming soon! 

While its roots are in Pennsylvania, Groundhog Day has become a popular event celebrated across the United States and even around the world. And what better way to celebrate than by watching the film classic?  

In the movie, Murray plays a weatherman, Phil Connors, who doesn’t predict a blizzard and gets caught in a time loop in Punxsutawney. Each day, he wakes to the same song playing on the radio and concocts different, crazy plans to spend his time before eventually falling in love with Rita (MacDowell). As his repetitive day starts to depress him, he seeks a better use of his time – and just maybe an escape from his time prison!
