With a nod to our spooky Friday The 13th post earlier this month, we’re highlighting 13 viewing hours, with a recommendation for each hour, so no matter when you have time in your day to take a break and watch, you can kick back, relax, and find something to get you in the spirit(s).

Why do we watch scary movies in October?

The history of the horror movie genre in American cinema traces its roots to the advent of the film industry itself. Silent classics like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu, to post-World War II era psychological horrors like Psycho, saw the start of the category. The 1970s and 1980s marked the rise of slasher films, and the 1990s onwards brought a resurgence of supernatural horror. Today, the genre continues to evolve but one thing remains constant, many viewers enjoy horror and thrillers to experience a range of emotions. Some of the theories proposed by psychologists as to why, are because these scary films provide a controlled environment to experience fear and adrenaline, offering a cathartic release of pent-up emotions. The genre allows people to confront and process their deepest fears in a safe and hopefully entertaining context. Whatever your reason, below is an hour by hour guide to some of our favorites to watch on All Hallows Eve.
