Ready for you to watch right away on Philo is best picture nominee, Top Gun: Maverick, on Paramount Network.

Tom Cruise is back in the skies in this action-packed sequel to the 1986 film. Fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell navigates his role as a flight instructor at Top Gun while confronting the ghosts of his past and honoring the legacy of his fallen comrade, Goose. The film features high-stakes aerial battles and emotional moments as Maverick and his students face new technologies and shifting military strategies, making for a thrilling and emotional journey that pays homage to the original film while breaking new ground in the aviation genre.

To celebrate this year’s top nominees, we’re taking a look back at their careers and the roles that have led them to this honor. We’re highlighting the filmographies of Actor in a Leading Role nominees Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Paul Mescal and Bill Nighy, as well as Actress in a Leading Role nominees Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Andrea Riseborough, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh.

Films featuring Austin Butler
Austin Butler is nominated for his breakthrough performance as Elvis this year, but one of his first major film roles was in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The movie follows the story of Rick Dalton, a fading TV actor, and his stunt double, Cliff Booth, as they navigate a changing film industry and the events surrounding the infamous Manson Family murders. In the movie, Butler plays fictional Manson family member Tex Watson.

Films featuring Colin Farrell
Colin Farrell received an Oscars nomination for his work in The Banshees of Inisherin, where he played Pádraic Súilleabháin. He already won a Golden Globe for his performance earlier in this film this year. The Irish superstar has previously won another Golden Globe award, one of which is for the film In Bruges, available on Philo! That film follows two hitmen, Ray and Ken, who are sent to Bruges, Belgium, to lay low after a job goes wrong. As they wait for their boss’s instructions, they explore the medieval city and encounter various eccentric characters, leading to unexpected consequences.

Films featuring Brendan Fraser
Fraser is nominated for his role in The Whale, where he plays a reclusive, morbidly obese English professor named Charlie who hopes to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Ellie. Prior, Fraser drove huge box office numbers in the late ‘90s and early 2000s with his portrayal of Rick O’Connell in The Mummy, and the ensuing adventurous trilogy of films. In the original, he and a librarian love interest discover the remains of an Egyptian priest and unleash the 10 plagues of Egypt.

Films featuring Paul Mescal
Mescal is nominated for his role in Aftersun where he plays Calum. In the movie, he and his young daughter Sophie and her father Calum, go on a holiday to Turkey where Calum’s struggles with depression and detachment become more apparent. With Mescal’s young career in acting being credited as just beginning in 2019, Philo does not currently offer a title he appears in. But remember to check back periodically to see what’s been added.

Films featuring Bill Nighy
Nighy is nominated for playing Rodney Williams in Living. In the film, his character receives a terminal cancer diagnosis and chooses not to tell his family, but attempts to turn his life around. In 2013, Nighy played a father figure in About Time. In the movie, he explains to his son when he turns 21 that the men in his family can travel back in time to moments they have lived before. He advises him to use the power wisely, but his son takes his own path to discover what’s right for him.

Films featuring Cate Blanchett
Blanchett is nominated for her role in Tár where she plays Lydia Tár. In that movie, she becomes the first female chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, who struggles to balance her personal and professional life. Blanchett has previously won two Academy Awards, including for best supporting actress for her work in The Aviator, which is available to watch on Philo! Blanchett plays Katherine Hepburn in the biographical film about Howard Hughes, who became an aviation pioneer and Hollywood director.

Films featuring Ana de Armas
De Armas is nominated for her work as Marilyn Monroe in Blonde. The film explores the life of Norma Jeane Mortenson and how she became an icon as Marilyn Monroe. De Armas endeared herself to audiences recently with her role in No Time to Die as Paloma, a CIA agent that assists James Bond. You can watch her performance in that critically acclaimed role on Philo! !

Films featuring Andrea Riseborough
Riseborough is nominated for playing Leslie Rowlad in To Leslie. Leslie is a West Texas alcoholic who wastes her $190,000 lottery winnings and ends up living on the streets. She looks for reconciliation for past grievances. One of her earlier roles in acting was when she played Dawn in Happy-Go-Lucky. The film focuses on a happy-go-lucky teacher that is learning how to drive, but has her outlook on life challenged by a cynical driving instructor.

Films featuring Michelle Williams
Williams was nominated for her role as Mitzi Fabelman in The Fabelmans. In the movie, she plays a mother figure that experiences loss and depression, while jeopardizing her marriage with an affair that her filmmaking son discovers. Williams previously dipped into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her roles in the Venom films. She plays Anne Weying, the fiancee of the afflicted journalist Brock Weying, who becomes Venom and begins to unleash carnage.

Films featuring Michelle Yeoh
Yeoh is nominated for her role in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once, where she plays Evelyn Wang. In the movie she owns a laundromat and begins to jump between universes to fight her daughter from another parallel universe while trying to repair strained relationships with her family. One of her earlier films that vaulted her to international fame was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which holds a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The martial arts classic is a must watch!

    Are there any sports channels, like girls college basketball, softball, and girls soccer? Also National Geographic.
