RuPaul’s Drag Race Slays at 2022 Emmy Awards Show

Promotional material for RuPaul's Drag Race is shown with two Emmy Awards.

In the race to the top, RuPaul drags, and rarely finishes second!

RuPaul’s Drag Race once again finished first in multiple categories at the annual Emmy Awards Show which aired last night. The legendary “show host with the most” won the 2022 award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program, while the namesake VH1 show earned the award for Outstanding Production Design For A Variety, Reality Or Competition Series. It’s the 26th Emmy that RuPaul’s Drag Race has won in the show’s stellar 13 year history.

RuPaul winning the billing as the best host is hardly new; having won the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program award for seven consecutive years. However, earning the Outstanding Production Design for a Variety, Reality or Competition Series award was a first for the popular show.

RuPaul’s Drag Race has endeared itself to audiences since 2009, always on the hunt to find “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” The best drag queens in the world compete to win a cash prize, crown, and bragging rights each season. Many shows challenge the contestant with a fashion design or a performance to determine their skills and whether they’ll advance to the next round. A runway show culminates each episode to determine who the winner is for each week, while two others are eliminated – usually after a “Lip Sync for Your Life” contest.

VH1 already renewed RuPaul’s Drag Race for a 15th season, with the premiere date yet-to-be-announced.

Can’t wait for next season? RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race is currently airing on Fridays at 8 pm EST. Find out which stars are under the wigs in each week’s episodes!

Six additional shows that are available on Philo were also nominated for Emmy Awards, including Better Call Saul, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Gaslit (STARZ add-on*), Killing Eve, Deadliest Catch, and Cooper’s Bar. While RuPaul’s Drag Race was the lone winner in 2022, we highly recommend all of these honorees.
